The following checklist by Summit Funding will help you as you prepare to move into your new home.
4 Weeks Before:
Prepare a "moving" folder to keep track of all the records and paperwork you will need. Make sure this folder includes any medical, school, financial, tax, and employment documentation you need for your mortgage application process.
Mark your calendar with your move deadline and any reminders.
Do a yard sale to get rid of items you do not plan to move.
Get in touch with a charity to donate items that did not sell.
Purchase all of your moving supplies including packing material, boxes, and tape.
Make a reservation with a moving company or a truck rental company.
Contact your insurance company to transfer your policies.
3 Weeks Before:
Schedule the cut-off date with your utility providers and set the start date for utilities at the new home.
Tell your friends and family about the move.
Donate non-perishable foods.
Change the address for subscriptions.
Give the post office your change of address notification.
Record the tax deductions for your moving expenses.
2 Weeks Before:
Transfer your safety deposit box, bank account, stocks, and bonds to a financial institution near your new home, if necessary.
Prepare the clothes you will be moving, remembering to set aside clothes in suitcases that you will need during the move.
1 Week Before:
Drain all outdoor equipment including propane tanks, garden hoses, and lawn mowers.
Discard flammable and toxic chemicals properly.
Label items you need to access during the move and store them in a separate area of the house.
Schedule pest control services before you move.
Clean out the refrigerator at least 24 hours before moving.
Move Out Day:
Load the items you will not need immediately first, and the items you will need sooner last, as they will be the first to get unloaded.
Do a final walkthrough of your home. Do not overlook the following areas: behind doors, the attic, stairwells, overhead in your garage, storage sheds, outside your home, closets, pantries, and cabinets.
Move In Day:
Prepare the home before the moving truck arrives by cleaning it. Be prepared to direct where boxes will go.
